Post-Christmas Giveaway and Interview with Iain Reading

In the midst of October while the mild breezes were blowing past me, the leaves were changing, and my school schedule was getting a heck of a lot heavier, a publicist contacted me, wondering if I would take up on her offer to help publicize a book for an author of hers.(Thank you, Kelsey!) I immediately took a seat on Kitty Hawk's plane for this project as a) I love books, b) I love spreading news of great books and authors, and c) I wanted to spread some holiday cheer around Christmas time! I have interviewed Iain Reading, the author of Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold, and have presented a giveaway for all those looking for a special gift after the Christmas holiday. Let the fun begin!

Interview with Iain Reading!

1. Is Iain Reading your real name? Or is it a pen name?

It is unfortunately a pen name because someone was already using my real name. Two someone's, in fact, and one of them wasn't getting very good reviews. But...  teaser here....  Iain Reading is extremely close to my real name.(duh duh duh – dramatic music)

2. When you have spare time from writing or doing other activities, what do you like to read?

Oddly enough I read almost entirely non-fiction. I like history and science books a lot. Nerdy, right?

3. As this is not your first interview, you have been asked a variety of different questions. Was there ever a question you wanted to be asked but never got asked?

No one ever asked me what my favourite pie is. And the answer is complicated. Is it Pumpkin Pie? Or Strawberry-Rhubarb? Hmmmmm. I am going with Strawberry-Rhubarb. With ice cream, of course.

4. As I have just finished IT by Stephen King, everything scary is stuck in my mind. One thing I took away from it was a question one of characters wanted to be asked. That question is: "Why did you get your ideas for your books?"

Ohhhh! Isn't It a wonderful book? I love the friendships between the kids in the Loser's Club. I would love to have written about such a wonderful friendship as they had. Now, on to business. Why did I get the ideas for my books. I honestly think there are just these ideas floating out there in the universe and if each one of us pays attention enough to things happening as we live our lives, day after day, year after year, then all those experiences help us to be able to recognise one of those ideas when it floats past us. And when it does, there it is. Voila!

5. Since your book has to do with traveling, if you had to travel with one of your characters, which one would you travel with?

Definitely Kitty Hawk. I mean, she has her own plane! She can fly anywhere! And she's the best pilot ever so she would definitely not crash.

6. What is your favorite animal?

I recently had a funny dream about mini hippos (that were about a foot and a half long). Those are my favourite animals right now.

7. When did you discover that you enjoy writing?

Just a few short years ago. Before that it was school assignments and blech! Who enjoys that? The secret is finding the voice of the book and then it suddenly stops being a chore.

8. If you were going on an unexpected trip, what is the one item you would bring with you?

iPad. How can anyone live without that?

9. What is your Hogwarts House?

My gut feeling would be Hufflepuff, but in fact it would be Ravenclaw. Intelligence and wit!

10. Since I am going to begin my journey into your books very soon, do you have any pieces of advice for me before I jump right in?

My only advice would be to say that the books only get better after the first one. (What a horrible thing to say, right? Do I mean to say that the first Kitty Hawk book is my LEAST favourite one? No, I would never say that...but the other ones are awesomer.)

About Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold

This first book of the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency Series introduces Kitty Hawk, an intrepid teenage pilot with her own De Havilland Beaver seaplane and a nose for mystery and intrigue. A cross between Amelia Earhart, Nancy Drew and Pippi Longstocking, Kitty is a quirky young heroine with boundless curiosity and a knack for getting herself into all kinds of precarious situations.

After leaving her home in the western Canadian fishing village of Tofino to spend the summer in Alaska studying humpback whales, Kitty finds herself caught up in an unforgettable adventure involving stolen gold, devious criminals, ghostly shipwrecks, and bone-chilling curses. Kitty's adventure begins with the lingering mystery of a sunken ship called the Clara Nevada. As the plot continues to unfold, this spirited story will have readers anxiously following every twist and turn as they are swept along through the history of the Klondike Gold Rush to a suspenseful final climatic chase across the rugged terrain of Canada's Yukon.
