Book Review: A Taxonomy of Love by Rachael Allen | Revenge of the Nerds, Relationship Problems, and Lattes

Image
The moment Spencer meets Hope the summer before seventh grade, it’s . . . something at first sight. He knows she’s special, possibly even magical. The pair become fast friends, climbing trees and planning world travels. After years of being outshone by his older brother and teased because of his Tourette syndrome, Spencer finally feels like he belongs. But as Hope and Spencer get older and life gets messier, the clear label of “friend” gets messier, too. Through sibling feuds and family tragedies, new relationships and broken hearts, the two grow together and apart, and Spencer, an aspiring scientist, tries to map it all out using his trusty system of taxonomy. He wants to identify and classify their relationship, but in the end, he finds that life doesn’t always fit into easy-to-manage boxes, and it’s this messy complexity that makes life so rich and beautiful. Discussion: " Please tell me you have lattes because if you don't, I am going to lose all hope in the universe

What Have I Promised Myself? | 2018 Book and Blogging Resolutions

Image
The announcement of the New Year could be heard from me as I shout from the foot of my bed, reading one of the best books out there! Do you feel different from 2017 you or do you feel the same? I feel exhilarated since I have just chugged a bunch of hot chocolate(it gets chilly in Texas, okay😎) and I cannot wait for the many 2018 book releases, coming out soon. Other than the excitement of the beginning of 2018, I feel guilty as I have finally gotten around to writing my resolutions for all the world to read. Instead of stalling anymore, I need to get on with this post and start my resolutions as soon as possible. My 2018 Resolutions: 1. Writing More Posts Whether I write weird posts, tags, or reviews for the year of 2018, I am hoping to do more posts than I had done last year. My initial goal was to try to get to 100 posts, but that may be crossing the line due to the amount of time it takes me to write a single post. Even though I want to have a large quantity of posts for th

RANKED: My Favorite Books of 2017

Image
As I am currently listening to 2017's top hits, I thought that this would be the perfect time to begin the new year with a post discussing my favorite books of 2017. 2017 was a somewhat great reading year. I gave a lot of 5 stars to books that can be brought into my favorites and others that can stay on my almost-favorites shelf. I wish I could but some of the books I read last year were not the greatest so I have compiled a list of books that have lasted with me throughout the year. 1. Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare First off, I have my #1 favorite for 2017: Lord of Shadows . I am pretty sure almost everyone is psychic on this one as any Cassandra Clare book is absolutely #1 for me. The only regret I have about this book is that I wish I had written a review for this when I had first read it, and maybe I will when I reread it; however, I was absent from my blog for a while so yeah. Anyway, I loved this addition to the Dark Artifices trilogy, and I am so glad that we do

Book Review: The Coldest Girl In Coldtown by Holly Black

Image
4/5 stars Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown  is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black. Discussion: In celebration of Holly Black's new book The Cruel Prince , I thought it would be fun to do a review of on

Book Review: Ghost Stories by Whit Taylor

Image
3/5 stars Ghost Stories  is a graphic novel collection offering three haunting explorations. Granted the chance to meet three of her dead idols in "Ghost," the author’s cartoon-self embarks on a journey to remote and unanticipated landscapes, in a story of self-discovery and healing. In "Wallpaper," a child tells the story of a household move, remodel, and loss through the lens of flashbulb memory. And in "Makers," two girls with an unorthodox friendship make a rocky transition into adulthood. Throughout each tale, ghosts exist as past selves and remnants of past relationships that are met with inquiry, resolution, and personal rebirth. Discussion: If you are looking for a spooky story to scare the socks off of your's and everyone else's feet, put down this book, get some tissues and cookies, and then sit yourself back down and reopen this book as this is not a book of scary ghost stories. Instead, this is a book full of stories that tel

Post-Christmas Giveaway and Interview with Iain Reading

Image
In the midst of October while the mild breezes were blowing past me, the leaves were changing, and my school schedule was getting a heck of a lot heavier, a publicist contacted me, wondering if I would take up on her offer to help publicize a book for an author of hers.(Thank you, Kelsey!) I immediately took a seat on Kitty Hawk's plane for this project as a) I love books, b) I love spreading news of great books and authors, and c) I wanted to spread some holiday cheer around Christmas time! I have interviewed Iain Reading, the author of Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold , and have presented a giveaway for all those looking for a special gift after the Christmas holiday. Let the fun begin! Interview with Iain Reading! 1. Is Iain Reading your real name? Or is it a pen name? It is unfortunately a pen name because someone was already using my real name. Two someone's, in fact, and one of them wasn't getting very good reviews. But...  teaser here....

My Monthly Adventures: November 2017

Image
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!  Before I even begin disussing everything I did this month, I will answer the question that everyone who is reading this is possibly thinking of: "Isn't it December, not November?" Well, um, yes, it's December and almost the beginning of January 2018; however, I am still celebrating the month of November. There is no problem with that! So, although I usually (and should)  post these in the beginning of the designated month, I never felt like writing all the adventures I experienced. I really did not read that much nor did much except for college and sleeping; however, I want to cross this post off the list before it never gets posted. As this month was somewhat boring(in my opinion), I will " try " to make this post short. Books I Read This Month 1. Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan 4.5/5 stars I love the Magnus Chase trilogy; however, this was not the satisfying ending that I was hoping for. There were a few thing
